Forensic Investigations

Forensic analysis, whether criminal or environmental is all about evidence, and the more evidence available, the more conclusive the case.  Environmental forensics involves the use of ratios of compounds and their isomers, and requires a thorough understanding of hydrocarbons.  Main uses are:

  • Characterising new or historical spills
  • Differentiating petroleum contamination from natural hydrocarbons
  • Determining sources of complex hydrocarbon mixtures
  • Correlation of petroleum spills to potential sources
  • Timing and ageing of spills
  • Assessment of coal tar products
  • Degree of weathering/biodegradation

Analysis can be performed on soils, ground-waters and product samples using a combination of analytical techniques including GC-FID, GC-MS, TLC and HPLC.  Analyses available include BiomarkersEuromarker (Fuel Dyes)SARACORAT plots and PONA.

Analytical advice and expert witness

Jim can offer practical advice based on over 40 years experience on the suitability and interpretation of laboratory analysis.  He has many years experience acting as an expert witness for a wide range of clients.

Interpretation of results

Interpretation of results is an area where experience can help save costs in disposal, treatment and further investigation, particularly in relation to the presence of coals and tar.  Unexpected results also often require a person experienced in laboratory analysis to explain/investigate.  It is usually assumed (often incorrectly) that the laboratory is wrong if duplicates are not similar or concentrations are higher/lower than expected.  Regardless of the laboratory having been used, Jim is able to offer the services outlined above and has already saved many consultants both money and time.
