Oily Waste Suites
The European Waste Catalogue (EWC) classes all oils as absolute hazardous entries, with the exception of edible oil. The Environment Agency’s publication HWR08 – "How to find out if waste oil and wastes that contain oil are hazardous" outlines the process for determining hazardous properties.
Jones Environmental Forensics offer several suites covering the requirements of the above publication.
- Oily Waste Suite (with dependant options)
- Initial analysis: PRO (C6-10) and DRO (C10-25, C25-40)
If lubricating/other oil is present: Solvent Extractable Matter (USEPA 9071b) using Petroleum Ether
If SEM is >1000mg/kg: PAH (8) including Benzo(j)fluoranthene
Further identification of extracted matter: SARA (Iatroscan™) - Full Oily Waste Suite (data only)
- This suite covers all the above regardless of PRO and DRO concentrations, and is reported as data only.
- Full Interpretive Reports
- A comprehensive report including full interpretation and classification of the waste.
The EA publication assumes a working knowledge of the EWC and refers to the technical document WM2: "Interpretation of the definition and classification of hazardous waste" accessed using their link www.environment-agency.gov.uk/hazwaste
Although all waste oils are classified as hazardous, it is important to determine what hazardous properties the oil possesses in order to ensure that anyone handling it is fully aware of the dangers.
If there are no hazard data sheets associated with the waste available, then appropriate hazardous properties are determined using the analysis above and oils are classified as follows:
- Hazardous by H5 (Harmful) if total hydrocarbon content > 25,000mg/kg
- Hazardous by H7 (Carcinogenic) if PRO >1,000mg/kg or DRO > 10,000mg/kg
- Hazardous by H7 (Carcinogenic) if lubricating/other oil >1000mg/kg, unless PAH(8) is <1% of the lubricating/other oil concentration
- Hazardous by H14 (Ecotoxic) if total concentration of lubricating/other oil is >25,000mg/kg
